Build Healthy Habits this Semester

People are creatures of habit — and your physical health is no exception. Building consistent routines around sleep, nutrition, movement, and preventive care can make a real difference in how you feel all semester long.

The good news? A new semester is one of the best times to start. When your schedule is already shifting, it’s easier to add new behaviors or let go of unhealthy ones. Here’s how to make it work:

Do It Every Day

Habits form faster with repetition. A small healthy behavior done daily — like taking a short walk, drinking enough water, or going to bed at a consistent time — is more effective than bigger efforts done occasionally. Block time in your schedule now, before the semester gets busy.

Be Flexible

Life happens. If you miss your planned window, do the thing later that day. If you miss a full day, start again as soon as you can. Progress matters more than perfection.

Make It Easy

Remove barriers between you and your healthy choices. Sleep in your workout clothes. Prep meals ahead of time. Keep healthy snacks accessible. The easier you make it, the more likely you are to follow through.

Make It Fun

Pair a new habit with something you enjoy — a favorite podcast, a friend, or a campus organization. Immediate rewards help reinforce behavior and keep you coming back.

Stack Your Habits

Attach new habits to things you already do every day. Stretch while your coffee brews. Take the stairs on your way to class. Small additions to existing routines add up over time.

If you’re working on your physical health and need support, the Campus Care is here for you. For more habit-building strategies, visit the Learning Center’s website.
